Dear future Eric,
It’s been almost 2 months of Grade 9 right now. I’ve already experienced some of the thrills and fears of being in high school. I have a lot to learn for the upcoming years, and I can’t wait!
I feel that the first few months of Grade 9 were pretty easy. The jump from Grade 8 to Grade 9 is a pretty big leap in your life; a new school, new friends/classmates, more clubs to join, more tests and assignments, and new courses. On the first few days, the teachers and the students leaders show us outlines of the school year, including the courses, clubs, classrooms etc. We got a lot of tests and homework assignments in the next few weeks, but to me they were a breeze. I predict there will be much more workload in the future
My 4 courses for the first semester are, in schedule order: Into to Business (Mrs. Campbell), Academic English (Mr. Grant), Pre-AP Science (Ms. Hurley), and Computer Technology (Mr.Webb). The courses for my next semester include Pre-Ap Math, Drama, Enriched French and Academic Geography, although I plan to switch out Drama for Music at the beginning of the semester. My favourite course so far is Intro to Business, also my homeroom. You get to learn the basics of the business world, and it’s a very important subject to learn about for the future. You need these business skills to run your own business and manage your own money. The class is never boring, and I learn something new and interesting each day.
The clubs that I have joined so far are Science Club, Computer Science Club, DECA and Mathletes. My favourite club out of all these clubs is DECA, because it’s a whole new experience to me. DECA is all about business competitions; you have a mock case and you only have a limited amount of time to present your solution to the judges. Although the competitions haven’t started yet, I really enjoy the training sessions that I go to every Wednesday. I get to chat with my DECA friends, and I learn new things about business. I also enjoy the DECA Stock Market Game; it’s a stock market simulation where you start with $100,000 and invest it any way you want, trying to get the most equity at the end. I don’t have plans on reaching Internationals (Atlanta, Georgia) this year, but I hope I can make it to Provincials at Toronto.
In the next few years of high school, I plan to get involved with many different activities, clubs and enrichment opportunities. These activities can be fun, you can learn something new, you get to know/see new people and make new friends, and they can be a great thing to put down on your application to university or college. Since I love writing math contests, I consider in taking many of those. I also want to take many Pre-AP/AP courses in the future to help me get into an excellent university/college (Harvard, MIT, even UW!). I won’t mind the tough workload; I will have time for other things in life, and I consider myself a very hard-working and intelligent student. I want to win scholarships and academic awards in the future to improve my chances of getting into those schools.
I don’t have a clear visual on what to become as an adult, but I’m really interested in careers related to mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry and business. Some careers include becoming a doctor, entrepreneur or a computer scientist. I want a high-paying and high-level job, and I want to grow up into a very hard-working, smart and social adult. I want to raise a happy, stable family and support my family very well.
I think I will enjoy the next few months of Grade 9 and even the next few years of high school. I don’t know what the future will look like, but I will stick to my current plans for now. High school is completely different from elementary school, but I seem to be enjoying it more than hating it. I will be seeing you in a few years!
Best wishes,
Eric
